Music 1 Syllabus

Objective

An introductory course in music, music reading and sight-singing. Upon completion, the student will be able to:

1.0 recognize notes by pitch name on the treble and bass clef;

1.1 vibration, transmission, reception, interpretation, recognition

      qualities of musical sound,- duration, pitch, timbre, volume

1.2 staff, treble and bass clefs, note names, note placement

1.3 leger lines, drill note names

1.4 moveable clefs

2.0 recognize and notate rhythms by sound, simple and compound, divided beat,

      no syncopation; begin pitch

2.1 notation of duration, time signatures, tempo, count and clap, dictation

2.2 time signatures, simple and compound, dictation

2.3 drill simple and compound, dictation

2.4 pitch, dictation

2.5 dictation

3.0 construct and recognize major and minor key signatures;

3.1 forming a major scale by whole step/ half step method

3.2 deriving major key signatures from scales; order of #'s and b's

      circle of keys

3.3 scale degree activity

3.4 ear training - add notes of scale in and drill and do dictation

3.5 ear training - drill and dictation major scale and simple, compound rhythm

4.0 construct intervals, recognize the same by sight and sound;

4.1 explain intervals- chromatically; drill by sight; emphasize key signatures.

4.2 intervals by sound; drill

4.3 intervals by sight and sound; drill

4.4 drill major scale, intervals, simple and compound time signatures

4.5 drill major scale, intervals, simple and compound time signatures

5.0 construct triads (major, minor, augmented, and diminished), recognize the

      same by sound;

5.1 explain construction by comparison of members of triad to members of scale;

      by stacks of triads

5.2 recognize quality when given triad; build from given note

5.3 demonstrate on keyboard the sound of the different triads; explain stability of each

5.4 drill recognition of triads by sight and sound

5.5 melodies and review
